LITERACY
Literacy is not only the ability to read and write, it's also in how we express ourselves, the words we choose, and the understanding we have of what we read and of the world around us. We will be reading everyday, so please bring a novel in that interests you! We will be looking at the fundamentals of writing for different purposes and audiences, reading for meaning and deciphering the intentions of the author, expressing ourselves through written and oral expression, and how the use of media and different techniques to get certain messages out.
Being in a world of technology, we sometimes forget that we cannot use "text talk" in assignments - remember to focus on writing what you think, not how you talk/text. Above all, remember to REVISE, REVIEW, and EDIT! You will NEVER have it PERFECT of the 1st draft! THERE WILL ALWAYS BE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT! The trick is to look at it, and have a partner read it over, and work together to see what can be changed to make your message stronger. We will be practicing these skills through individual, group, and class activities and assignments, it will be a lot of work, but it will strengthen your language skills throughout the year! This class will be your chance to be creative and push the line of comfort to the world of possibilities literacy can bring! |
